In the beverage, food, and pharmaceutical industries, reverse osmosis (RO) is the core technology for producing pure water. Whether producing purified water, blending juice, or brewing beer, water quality directly determines product quality. However, in actual projects, clients often face a key question: Is single-stage RO sufficient? Or is a second-stage RO system necessary?

As a company serving 125 countries worldwide and with experience delivering equipment to over 9,000 water beverage filling production lines, Jndwater will systematically analyze the core differences between single-stage and second-stage RO water treatment and provide a clear decision-making framework to help you choose the most suitable water treatment system for your factory.

I. What are primary and secondary reverse osmosis water treatment equipment?

  • Single-stage reverse osmosis: Raw water undergoes only one reverse osmosis membrane treatment. The permeate is directly used in production or enters subsequent processes.
  • Two-stage reverse osmosis: The permeate from the first-stage RO is used as the feed water for the second-stage RO, undergoing reverse osmosis treatment again. Simply put: First-stage RO is “one-time filtration,” and second-stage RO is “two-time filtration.”

II. Primary RO vs. Secondary RO: Comparison of Core Differences

comparative dimensionprimary reverse osmosissecondary reverse osmosis
process flowRaw water → Pre treatment → Primary RO → Produced waterRaw water → Pre treatment → Primary RO → Intermediate water tank → Secondary RO → Produced water
desalination rate97%-99%99.5%-99.9%
Production water conductivity5-20 μ S/cm (depending on the quality of the raw water)1-5 μS/cm, Even<1 μ S/cm
System recovery rate50%-75%50% -65% (secondary RO concentrated water reflux can be increased to over 70%)
investment costbenchmarkIncrease by 60% -80%
operational energy consumptionbenchmarkIncrease by 40% -50%
floor areasmallerLarger (requiring the addition of an intermediate water tank and a secondary RO unit)
Membrane lifespan2-3 yearsPrimary membrane takes 2-3 years, secondary membrane takes 3-5 years (with good inlet water quality)

III. When should we choose the first stage of reverse osmosis?

The first-stage reverse osmosis system is JNDWATER’s best-selling product line and is suitable for the following scenarios:

  1. Raw water quality is good (TDS < 500 ppm)
If your raw water is municipal tap water or high-quality groundwater with a low TDS value, the first-stage RO system can produce water that meets the standards for most beverages.
Raw water typeTypical TDSConductivity of first level RO produced water
municipal tap water100-300 ppm2-10 μS/cm
High quality groundwater200-500 ppm5-15 μS/cm

2.Conventional requirements for water quality of the product

Product TypeWater quality requirements:
Ordinary purified waterConductivity<20 μS/cm
Carbonated beverage preparationConductivity<10 μS/cm
Juice beverage preparationConductivity<10 μS/cm
Tea beverage preparationConductivity<10 μS/cm
Ordinary food processingConductivity<20 μS/cm
  1. Limited budget, pursuing cost-effectiveness
The first level RO system has low investment, low operating costs, and small footprint, making it a reasonable choice for most beverage factories.
JNDWATER suggests that for most ordinary beverage factories, a configuration of first level RO+post UV sterilization+precision filtration is completely sufficient, and there is no need to spend extra money on “unused water quality”.

Ⅳ、 When is it necessary to choose secondary reverse osmosis?

1.The raw water quality is poor (TDS > 1000 ppm)

Raw water typeTDSConductivity of first level RO produced waterSecondary RO water conductivity
High TDS groundwater1000-2000 ppm20-40 μS/cm2-8 μS/cm
brackish water2000-5000 ppm40-100 μS/cm5-15 μS/cm
Groundwater in coastal areas800-1500 ppm15-30 μS/cm1-5 μS/cm

2.The product has extremely high requirements for water quality

Product Typewater quality requirementsRecommended Configuration
Aseptic filling of tea/juiceConductivity<5 μ S/cmSecondary RO+UV+Terminal Filtration
Dairy products (yogurt, dairy beverages)Conductivity<3 μ S/cmSecondary RO+UV+sterile storage tank
Beer brewing waterConductivity<5 μ S/cmSecondary RO+dechlorination+deoxygenation device
Pharmaceutical purified waterConductivity<1 μ S/cmSecondary RO+EDI
Electronic grade waterElectrical resistivity>18M Ω· cmSecondary RO+EDI+Polishing Mixed Bed
Cosmetics production waterConductivity<5 μ S/cm, sterileSecondary RO+UV
  1. High requirements for system stability
The secondary RO system buffers the water quality fluctuations of the primary RO. Even if the raw water changes due to seasons and weather conditions (such as increased turbidity during the rainy season and TDS during the dry season), the secondary RO can still output pure water with stable water quality, ensuring production continuity and product consistency.
  2. There is a demand for concentrated water reuse
The concentrated water produced by the secondary RO has good water quality (conductivity 50-200 μ S/cm) and can be refluxed to the inlet of the primary RO, increasing the total recovery rate of the system by 5% -10%, reducing raw water consumption and wastewater discharge, and meeting environmental protection requirements.
  3. Plan to enter the high-end market
If your product is positioned in the mid to high end market, or if you plan to upgrade your product line in the future (such as upgrading from regular purified water to sterile bottled beverages), directly upgrading to secondary RO can avoid repeated investment in future modifications.
